Legs Against Arms 5K Run, Walk, Roll focuses on strengthening our limbs as we oppose illegal handguns in Philadelphia. This event has created an unfortunate niche - honoring loved ones lost to gun violence. Close to 20 teams ran in honor of lost loved ones in 2010.
“My immediate and extended family lacked a place to celebrate the life of my mom. We did not have a time that focused on the good of her life without feeling the pain of our loss. The Legs Against Arms Run/Walk provided my family with the opportunity to participate in an event that she would have thoroughly enjoyed. We have the chance to remember all the traits we love about my mom with the people she loved most.” Daughter of a woman gunned down on 9th & Chestnut Sts.
In its 5th year, Legs Against Arms attracts runners, walkers, wheelchair rollers, children and adults who are committed to changing the social norm that celebrates violence by focusing on violence prevention, honoring loved ones lost to gun violence and modeling healthy life choices. The City of Philadelphia has incorporated this important event as one of the city sponsored events to stem the epidemic of violence in Philadelphia.
The Celebration of Youth immediately follows the race and engages over 40 partnering groups to shine the spotlight on the accomplishments of talented youth, and provide interactive educational opportunities for young and old alike to learn about making healthy choices around handguns, at risk behavior, nutrition and fitness. Children exhibit their athletic, musical, artistic and performance skills. Winners of the poster contest presented and displayed their work. The award winning poster design is printed on the race T-shirt. It is clear that when children feel safe, respected and acknowledged, they are oh so willing to become engaged.
As one participant exclaimed,
“Seeing so many individuals of all ages, races, religions sharing, working, having fun, and learning. The activities were engaging and thoughtful.”
